Hama Hama Oysters

We were driving down highway 101 on our way back to Portland when something caught our eye that made us turn our car around. There was a series of small A frames clustered along the shore and we decided to go investigate. We had stumbled upon the Hama Hama Oyster Saloon and Farm Store located in Lilliwaup Washington.

We walked up to the host stand and quickly learned that eating under one of the coveted A-Frames was not in the cards for us this afternoon – highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you want to have this experience – but we were nonetheless excited to try the oysters at this unique and bustling outdoor restaurant. We looked over the menu with both raw and grilled options and opted for a half dozen of each per the recommendation of the host to get the full experience. We took our number card and found an open *regular* table to sit down and take in the views of the Hood Canal as we waited for our oyster flight. We noticed a few dogs belonging to other groups and immediately grabbed Odin out of our car to join in the fun.

In no time at all a very charismatic waiter returned with our trays of delish looking oysters and a full explanation of each variety, how it was farmed and harvested, and the taste profile. By the time he was done we felt not only hungry and ready to dive in but also more informed about what to look for in the taste of each oyster. It took our dining experience to another level.

Tiny forks in hand we dug in savoring each chewy bite. The oysters were fresh and flavorful, and you could really taste differences between the varieties arranged around the plate.

After our meal we walked along the shoreline and up a huge mound of oyster shells with a boat cemented on top. It was a hot spot for the kids at the restaurant to play while their families enjoyed their meal at the nearby tables.

We would highly recommend stopping at Hama Hama Oysters for a fun experience especially to break up a long road trip up or down the 101.
